Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one. ~Stella Adler

The Philosophy of Beauty
My brother showed me this film and I really liked a lot of points it made. I don't know if I agree completely with the view of contemporary/modern art presented, since it seems very selective. I think, however, this selectivity was intentional to force the point that SOME contemporary/modern art has gone too far and is all about shock value and money, as apposed to beauty or even an idea.
If you have and hour, there are six 10 minute videos found on youtube and it is well work the time. The manner in which this philosopher takes you through what beauty really is and how it has been presented throughout time is wonderful and also a little saddening. This documentary is, of sorts, a look into this poor old romantics heart and of view of his longing for the a return to what beauty used to be. I wholeheartedly agree that the old representational art of the past is beautiful and that there is nothing more awe inspiring than Roman and Victorian architecture. More of it in our lives would be so good for us. At the same time, I can't help but believe that there is still so much that is beautiful being created today and we should be just as eager to seek that out as well.

Modern art is Cool?
Currently I am trying to figure out who my favorite artist is. I think it is important to have favorites of things, because in many ways they help define you. So, I am delving into the thousands of years worth of art and trying to figure out what I enjoy the most. Today I spent some time with good old modern art and found a lot of stuff that I like. Here is a random selection:
Franz Kline
Alberto Giacometti
Salvador Dali
Pablo Picasso
Ad Reinhardt
Otto Dix
Man Ray
Piet Mondrian
Constantin Brancusi
Jacob Epstein
František Kupka

Elle Malan
My lil sis has started producing a lot of quality work that I really wanted to show off. I had seen her do some cool sketches and things in the past, however just recently she through together a blog and started spitting out some really solid work, that I love.
Currently Elle is looking for freelance work, so if your interested check out her blog. (the second to last piece is a portrait she was commissioned to do)

Dave Malan
I have been meaning to put some of my brother's stuff on here for a while. He is an amazing artist and I really love his style. Here are a few of my favorites.
It was really hard narrowing down which pictures I liked most. I've always just been astounded my my brothers talent. I love the sketches most of all, because I can really see the process, however, I can't understand how he can put so much life in the eyes of each in individual. Be sure to check out more of his stuff at his website: www.davemalan.com or at his blog: www.brilliantanyway.blogspot.com

Jason de Caires Taylor
Today I was bombarded with interesting information about the ocean, which beautifully led me to this really amazing underwater sculpture stuff by Jason de Caires Taylor. I love sculptures and am now scuba certified, so it was excited to see a new way to integrate the two loves into one. These underwater sculptures are located just of the shore of the tiny Caribbean Nation of Grenada and I imagine looking at them would be both exciting and inspiring. (Just as long as Jaws didn't happen to be there admiring the art at the same time)
I especially love seeing the sculptures after the ocean has made them it's own.

Vik Muniz
This guy makes art our of everything, it's really cool. Here is just a small selection of the different mediums he uses. The stuff done with dirt is my favorite, it has a great texture. Also, make sure you check out the video at the bottom of him speaking at TED.
